Katherine Verdery (n. 1948) a facut studii de antropologie la Reed College, Portland, Oregon si Stanford University, California. Preda antropologie la prestigioasa Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, unde este profesor titular din 1987, si la University of Michigan. In 1992 a tinut la University of Rochester conferintele Lewis Henry Morgan, momentul clasic de consacrare pentru antropologii americani. Este membra in colegiile de redactie ale periodicelor Anthropology Today, Slavic Review si Eastern European Politics and Societies. Verdery s-a specializat in problematica societatilor est-europene si in antropologia proprietatii. Incepand din 1973, a petrecut in total mai mult de patru ani ani Romania; in 19932000 a intreprins cercetari in Transilvania in privinta schimbarii relatiilor de proprietate in agricultura postcomunista, concretizate in lucrarea The Vanishing Hectare: Property and Value in Postsocialist Transylvania (2003).
