Dupa ce si-a luat licenta la University of California (Santa Barbara), a obtinut doctoratul in religie si filozofie la Radhakrishnan Institute for Advanced Study in Philosophy de la University of Madras (India). Din 1989 a predat filozofia religiilor si mai ales filozofia indiana la mai multe universitati din Canada, Singapore, Anglia, SUA. In prezent este profesor la Department of Religious Studies de la Michigan State University. Este membru al American Philosophical Association, American Academy of Religion, Indian Philosophical Association, Association for Asian Studies s.a.
