Thomas Sebeok, Semnele. Introducere in semiotica

S-a nascut in 1920 la Budapesta, iar in 1936 a emigrat in SUA. Doctorat la Princeton University (1945). Cariera academica prestigioasa la mari universitati nord-americane. A jucat un rol decisiv in dezvoltarea semioticii ca disciplina de sine statatoare si in deschiderea ei catre stiintele biologice si cognitive. Turnee de conferinte in intreaga lume (la Bucuresti, in oct. 1998, ca invitat al Colegiului Noua Europa). Fondator al unor publicatii stiintifice importante (printre altele, Semiotica, 1969); presedinte al Semiotic Society of America (1984), membru a numeroase institutii stiintifice (Guggenheim, Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, Woodrow Wilson Center, Centrul Olandez pentru Studii Avansate, Smithsonian Institution etc.). Fondator (1956) si presedinte al Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies. In 1991 i s-a acordat titlul de Profesor Emerit de antropologie, lingvistica, semiotica si studii centro-eurasiene. S-a stins din viata in 2001.
